WHY SCHOOLING?

Today in the African Studies Class our tutor started   lesson  with a very simple question which appeared to be somehow difficulty when it hit our ear drums. He said "Well students you are doing African Studies, what do you want to become? Here at the college we have those who do Education and some day they become teachers, those who do law are going to become lawyers,,,, and you African Studies students what do you want to achieve?

In my ears the question came  differently. It sounded "WHY SCHOOLING?" Ask this same question to the students in some higher learning institutions here in Tanzania. You will be astonished with the responses you will get. Some particular courses at the colleges due to external influences like advice from friends or persuasive words from parents or other people who may happen to be the ones to provide the bursary. Some other do courses in higher learning institution without any goal. It is embarrassing when you pose this question before them.  Majority of the students in higher learning institutions will answer the question  basing on the employment and earning a living issues. Most parents too are always worried when their children take such courses like African Studies or Philosophy which appear not to be promising employment someday.
Among the issues i hate is when i hear about moving form one office to another with your CV and Certificates and the application letters in search for a job.  Can't I do something different apart from being employed when I complete my college studies? Unemployment is always the problem in many countries even in great nations like United State of America. Higher learning institutions produce more "experts" and professionals than the offices can accommodate them. Can't these graduates or rather professionals and experts do something different apart from being obsessed with being hired by some organizations?
When most university students aim at being employed someday when they complete their studies gives me a clue that there must be something terribly wrong somewhere.  Unless we arrest it the society will always have graduates who can't use their knowledge they learnt from colleges to do something different.
I think there is something wrong with the education system. What do the students learn in these institutions? Are they taught to become creative? Are they taught to become self employed? Or it is the education system which the teacher delivers the materials and the students have to reproduce them when the exam comes, such that when they are able to cram and write the same thing they were taught in the answer sheet they graduate with A's but they can't use what they have learnt and become self employed but hope to be hired?
